Portion sizes have certainly been increasing throughout time. As our food supply becomes more abundant, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that we eat more because food is plentiful.
However, there are some instances of supersizing due to environmental factors – such as the size of our plates, bowls and glasses increasing. There is also the increase in size of packaged food and meals – such as burgers, which are almost twice the size now than they were twenty years ago.
When we eat processed, packaged food, it’s natural to consume the amount given. What we may not have noticed is how much the standard portion has supersized throughout time. [Image source: http://img2.timeinc.net]
