Stephanie Gilmore launches 2017 Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Series

Media release - 16 November 2016

Six-time World Surfing Champion Stephanie Gilmore has launched the 2017 Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Series with a simple message – “focus on completing, not competing”.

Advocating the benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle, Gilmore encouraged Aussie kids to participate in the largest kids’ triathlon series on the planet which this year will attract its 200,000th TRYathlete.

Close to 16,500 kids from 7 to 15 years old are expected to swim, ride and run in the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon between January and May 2017 at 10 locations across the country. Since its inception, more than 190,000 Aussie kids have participated in the event which aims to instil a love for physical activity that will last a lifetime.

Evidence suggests that physically active children are more likely to mature into physically active adults, however participation rates in organised competitive sports are falling.

“Some kids are discouraged from participating in activity because they won’t be recognised as a winner,” said Gilmore. “I love the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon because the emphasis is on completion, not competition, allowing all kids to finish the course to the best of their ability while being rewarded equally with a medal for their efforts, not their place.”

TRYathletes will be cheered all the way to the finish line by their supporters and the enthusiastic Haier HELP TEAM, where they will meet one of the Weet-Bix Kids TRY Heroes.

Over the past 20 years, the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon has become synonymous with boosting self-esteem. In fact, eight out of 10 parents believe their child’s self-esteem/self-confidence improved as a result of participating.
