Food in focus: pineapples

The humble pineapple is synonymous with summer, but in fact they are grown and harvested year round. The sweet tropical fruit is the perfect addition to fruit salads and decadent desserts, but just a piece is also packed with powerful health benefits.

Pineapples contain fibre, making them a terrific food for gut health. Pineapples are also an excellent source of vitamin C, so a great fruit to enjoy when your immune system needs a boost. And, they are a good source of thiamine, magnesium and vitamin B6, which all act to keep the body healthy and functioning.

Interestingly, pineapples are also an excellent source of manganese, important for the health of your bones.

Tips to pick the perfect pineapple

Choose one that’s free from soft spots or bruises and if it has a top, make sure the leaves are nice and green. A pineapple should feel nice and heavy for its size. Contrary to what many people think, pineapples don’t need to ripen at home, they are always ready to eat as soon as they hit stores, regardless of their colour!
