FAQ

What is this blend of proteins in Sanitarium PB™?
This protein beverage contains a blend of three protein sources- whey, soy and casein. Whey and casein are milk-derived, while the soy protein is isolated from soybeans. All three are present in a ratio of 25:25:50 (whey, soy and casein respectively). There is emerging research in the area of consuming a combination of plant and dairy based proteins for sports nutrition, with a particular interest in leucine.

What is it about these proteins?
Being a blend of plant and milk proteins, a complete profile of essential amino acids (EAA’s) is achieved- these are the amino acids that cannot be synthesised by the body and need to be obtained from the diet. Our protein beverage achieves 14.6g EAA with 3.1g leucine per 500mL serve.

What does ‘slow, medium and fast acting’ mean?
The claims ‘slow, medium and fast acting proteins’ reflects the blend of proteins and their different rates of digestion by the muscles within the body. Casein is slowly digested over 6hours, whey is rapidly digested over 2-3 hours, while soy has more of medium digestion rate.

More about amino acids- what are they? What is the difference between ‘essential’ and ‘non-essential’ amino acids?
The primary role of amino acids is to build protein. There are a total of 20 amino acids, 9 of which are essential and cannot be produced by the body. The body relies on diet to obtain these. The other 11 non-essential amino acids can be adequately produced by the body. All amino acids in this beverage are naturally present from the protein containing ingredients- whey protein concentrate, soy protein, calcium caseinate and milk solids.

Why is sugar added to PB™?
Sanitarium adds some sugar to PB™ to round out the flavour. The total sugar of PB™ is only slightly above regular whole milk which has just under 5%* total sugar - PB™ Vanilla has around the same amount as this at around 5%, and PB™ Chocolate is around 6%. Per 500mL bottle, Vanilla and Chocolate PB™ have 25.6g and 31g of total sugar, respectively. The naturally occurring sugar in PB™ comes from ingredients including skim milk powder and whey protein which provide 20% of the sugar total.

How do I weigh up the balance of key nutrients?
The Health Star Rating is a good way of considering key nutrients overall, including sugar. It’s important to weigh up the balance of all nutrients, rather than just considering sugar. PB™ achieves a Health Star Rating of 5 as it is high in protein (32g per serve), and low in saturated fat and sodium. It’s also a source of fibre and contains all essential amino acids as well as being high in calcium.
