What is protein?

Protein is a macronutrient that is made up of smaller parts called amino acids. There are 20 amino acids that we need for good health. Our bodies can make 11 and the other 9 need to come from our food – these are known as ‘essential’ amino acids.

Why do we need protein?

Protein is essential for human health and its function varies widely. It is important for maintaining and growing our muscles and it also vital for growing teenage bones as part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle.

What are the protein sources in Weet-Bix Protein?

Weet-Bix Protein is powered by wheat and pea plant protein. The wheat protein occurs intrinsically within the wheat and pea protein is added in the form of a crisp (small ball).

Why was pea protein chosen for Weet-Bix Protein over another type of protein?

Pea protein was chosen as it is suitable for those following a plant-based or vegetarian diet. It is also allergen-friendly for those with common food allergens such as dairy, soy and egg.

Why is sugar added to Weet-Bix Protein?

Sanitarium adds some sugar to Weet-Bix Protein to round out the flavour and to help form and maintain the small bite-sized biscuits. There is also a small amount of naturally occurring sugar which comes from the wheat.

How do I weigh up the balance of key nutrients?

The Health Star Rating is a good way of considering key nutrients overall, including sugar. It’s important to weigh up the balance of all nutrients, rather than just considering one nutrient. Weet-Bix Protein achieves a Health Star Rating of 4.5 as it is high in protein (10g per serve), high in fibre and is low in saturated fat. It is also very high in wholegrains and high in iron and B-vitamins.
