Responding to Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu

Sanitarium joined forces with Mars Foods, Scalzo Foods and Manildra Group to send 13 tonnes of products to Vanuatu after Cyclone Pam hit the Pacific nation in March 2015. The country continues to rebuild following the devastation of the category-five tropical cyclone – one of the worst natural disasters in the recorded history of the islands.

At least 15 people were killed in the storm and 75,000 were left homeless. Many schools in the affected areas lost their buildings, crops, and many of the staff also saw their homes and personal belongings destroyed. One school in Kwataparen lost 90% of its buildings, including classrooms, staff homes, dorms, the kitchen and dining hall. It was able to restart classes under temporary shelter and tarpaulins.

Seven schools and local surrounding communities received donated products, which included baking flour, yellow and green split peas, red kidney beans, rice, sauces, Weet-Bix, Skippy Cornflakes and So Good.
