In December, Sanitarium supported the 2017 Woolworths Carols in the Domain Salvos Candle Bag Initiative by donating over 25,000 serves of UP&GO and Weet-Bix Go products.
The Salvation Army has been the charity beneficiary of the Woolworths Carols in the Domain since its inauguration in 1938, selling candles to attendees to raise money. The Candle Bag has become an annual family tradition and is the only way to purchase candles for the event.
Christmas time is one of the busiest times of the year for thousands of families that reach out to The Salvation Army for help and the Woolworths Carols in the Domain event is a great opportunity to raise vital funds and awareness of important issues, with December’s event focusing on the hidden issue of youth homelessness.
The initiative met the goal of raising over $140,000, with all proceeds from the sale of candle bags going towards eradicating youth homelessness.
On any given night, there are 44,000 young people under the age of 25 who have nowhere to go, sleeping in their cars, on friends’ couches or on the street. Salvation Army works tirelessly to provide a safe place and pathways out of homelessness for young people. It takes $107 a day to provide a day’s worth of support to a young person looking for a permanent home.
