Sadly, more and more people across Australia are either homeless or living with the fear of losing their home. Coast Shelter, a charity based in Gosford, NSW, has been operating for over 25 years with the ultimate goal of ending homelessness on the Central Coast.
In the financial year 201-17, Coast Shelter’s Coast Community Centre served up more than 50,000 meals and 1500 food hampers, as well as providing other free services such as counselling, energy vouchers, legal services and no-interest loans.
Between 2004 and 2013-14, Sanitarium donated $166,000 to Coast Shelter’s Sanitarium House program, leasing four houses for families. In 2013-14, at Coast Shelter’s request, this funding was reallocated to meal provision at the community centre. We have also donated food for Coast Shelter’s community outreach programs.
Many of our employees are delighted to get involved in volunteering, either as a one-off or on a regular basis. One of the venues where you’ll regularly find Sanitarium staff with their sleeves (literally) rolled up is Coast Shelter.
Once a month, a rostered team from Sanitarium’s Logistics department can be found brandishing sharp knives (in the friendliest possible way!) in the community centre’s kitchen.
“What happens at Coast Shelter is symbolic of what Sanitarium’s meant to be about – making a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of our communities,” says one Logistics team member. “So the staff who volunteer here are engaging in the most practical way possible with the Sanitarium mission.”
