Foodbank's Food Fight & Big Breakfast raises food security awareness

Food Fight

Sanitarium supports Food Fight, a month-long campaign run annually by Foodbank, Australia’s largest non-profit food relief organisation. Food Fight raised 7 million serves of food for the 2,400 charities and 1,500 schools supported by Foodbank around Australia.

In 2015-16, Sanitarium provided almost 38,000kg of Weet-Bix to Foodbank Australia and a further 25,000kg to Foodbank’s Key Staples program, a major initiative to secure a regular supply of staple foods for households in need.

Big breakfast

In October 2014, Sanitarium donated its products and employees volunteered their time to support Foodbank NSW & ACT in their fundraising and awareness event, Big Breakfast, in Sydney’s Martin Place on World Food Day during Anti-Poverty Week in October.

The initiative was designed to raise awareness of the serious hidden problem of food insecurity in Australia as well as to raise much-needed funds, with volunteers providing over 2,500 serves of breakfast to the public in return for donations.

The Foodbank Hunger Report 2016 reveals the growing hunger problem facing the nation, one in six Australians say they have experienced food insecurity at least once in the past 12 months. Over half of them have experienced it between 1 and 3 times, but for more than a quarter of them, it is a regular occurrence. Over 644,000 people now receive food relief each month, one third of whom are children.
